Alumni Associations offer support for unemployed

If you are engaged in a job search, it is important to ensure you are taking advantage of every search resource at your disposal.  For example, I recently received an email update from my local chapter of the  Michigan State University Alumni Association.   In addition to invitations to attend a spring training game to watch the Detroit Tigers play the New York Yankees at George Steinbrenner Field in Tampa, or to go to TGI Friday’s Front Row located on the corner of International Drive and Sand Lake Road to watch Michigan State play the University of Michigan in basketball, there was another much more useful nugget for those engaged in a job search.    This email contained two job search opportunities included in this clip from the email.

Resources for Job Seekers

Our local club has begun listing job postings on our website.  Alumni Career Services is available to any dues-paying member of the MSU Alumni Association.  If you are currently unemployed, you can take advantage of a free membership to the MSU Alumni Association so that you can take advantage of the Alumni Career Services too.

‘Economic Stimulus Package’ – MSU Alumni Association offers unemployed alumni free membership

As of July 2009, 14.5 million persons were unemployed in the United States,1 according to the U.S. Department of Labor Statistics. In the state of Michigan, where unemployment is reported at 15 percent – the nation’s highest – the Michigan State University Alumni Association responded by unveiling its “Economic Stimulus Package” – a complimentary membership for unemployed MSU alumni.

If you are a fellow Michigan State alum and unemployed, go take advantage of this offer now.  If you are not a Spartan, you might want to check if your alumni association is offering a similar opportunity.   If they aren’t, you might want to suggest that they start!

Michael, I didn’t know you were an MSU alumn! How exciting. :)

This is a great tip, especially for Millennial college alumni, to get involved with the school groups, network and find new opportunities.

Hope to catch up with you in San Diego!

@Cori

Thanks for chiming in. I thought the tip was good in general. Really appreciate your point that is esecially valauble for Millenials. It certainly seems to me that the job leads would be more relevant to that group of job seekers, rather than geezers like me! Other resoruces could be helpful to any job seeker though!

Mike, Thanks for the post. What a great suggestion for job seekers. I will definitely spread the word about checking with alumni associations. I would have never thought to do that.

@Trish – that is often the key to a successful job search, isn’t it? Outhinking your competition by getting yourself out in front of people as many ways and places as possible. LAtely, I have been looking at these niche spots as the potential differentiator for some.
