My speaking gig on Social Networking and Human Resources

Recently, I was a featured guest speaker on this audio webinar entitled:

Social Networking: Why Your Company Can’t Afford to Ignore It

December 17, 2009
1:30 – 3:00 PM (Eastern)

Twitter. MySpace. Facebook. The list goes on and on. These popular social networking sites may have started as a platform for teenagers to stay in touch with their friends, but today they are a powerful force in politics, business, and consumer behavior. The popularity of social media has exploded as more and more adults and working professionals are communicating online. Corporate America has reacted in a variety of ways, from outright bans on employee use of social media to embracing it head-on, without looking at possible consequences.

In this presentation, we are going to look at crafting a sensible approach to social media, and just what that approach can do for your company. Dismissing this medium as a fad can have dire consequences, both internally and externally. With 80% of Internet users participating in some sort of social networking, you can’t afford to let these online conversations take place without your involvement.
Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what “social media” includes, and why it’s here to stay.
  • Discover many of the advantages of incorporating social media into your employee communications strategy.
  • Reveal some of the most common dangers, pitfalls and downsides to avoid.
  • Receive actionable next steps for your organization’s use of social media.
  • Presented by:

Walter E. Orechwa is Chief Executive Officer and Owner of Projections, Inc. He has been working in employee communications since 1984, when he earned a BA in Broadcasting and Public Relations from Mississippi State University.

Walter’s company, Projections, has been perfecting the art of employee communications with small to Fortune 500 size companies across the U.S. and Canada. In 2009, Projections was recognized as one of the fastest-growing private companies in America, by Inc. magazine.

Projections began producing employee communication slide shows over 30 years ago, and the company has constantly evolved as the media and formats have changed. From slides into video, DVD, websites, eLearning and today’s Social Media and Web 2.0., there has always been one constant – the message is what matters. Projections’ highly skilled team of professionals delivers vital information to employees world wide every day.

Mike VanDervort has two decades of HR experience at some of the top Fortune 500 and Great Place to Work employers, Michael VanDervort is an eclectic HR professional with an extraordinary curiosity about how things work.

By day Michael does web research and “think-tank” projects on human resources issues.

By night, Michael writes about human resources and business topics related to social media, human resources, employee relations, the culture of organizations, leadership and best business practices.
