Kris Dunn on Social Media

I am really thrilled to be able to write about the heavy dose of social media activity that has been taking place at HR Florida.   Kris Dunn gave a great presentation on using social media tools yesterday that was very well received.  He suggests that HR professionals use three tools as a gateeway into the social media spce if you are new.  These are Google Reader, twitter, and LinkedIn.

Google Reader is useful to aggregate blog and news feeds.   It also saves time and effort, one of the the chief objections by many HR professionals about using social media.  Kris suggests starting out with 20-30 sources initially, and building from there as you become accustomed to using the tool.

To start using Twitter, Dunn suggests starting out life as a “lurker”.  Doing this allows you to get a feel without feeling the pressure to tweet.  He suggest finding 50-100 people in your field to follow initially.

LinkedIn is important since it is a primary recruiting tool in the evolving social media space.

Getting involved with these three things can help you build your skills, and move your HR career into the social media space.

HR Bloggers Panel

This panel was well intended and was a very dynamic and interactive session.  Sharlyn Lauby did a great job as the moderator.  Panel participants included Kris Dunn, Jessica Lee, Michael Long, Laurie Ruettimann and myself.    Many of the questions centered around blogging as a business tool and why companies might embrace it. (or not)  It was great fun and I look forward to the chance to do it again soon!  More comments on specific discussions later.

HR Florida Tweetup

The tweetup happens later tonight and it looks like a turnout of 50 or more people should continue the fun on this Social Media Monday at HR Florida.  More on this later as well!
